Congratulations! Because of the more than 40,000 people who sent emails to the Cook County Board of Commissioners, we were able to keep the proposed phone tax out of the County budget.
Late on February 29th – the day a deal had to be struck to avoid a possible government shut down – the Cook County Board finally approved a budget.
And they were able to come to a resolution without imposing a phone tax that would have been bad for both consumers and businesses.
Originally, several Cook County Commissioners proposed a new tax of $48 per phone per year – a tax that would have
raised some phone plans by as much as 131%! And the proposed tax applied to every phone – including cell
phones and broadband lines.
Creating a new phone tax – on top of the many federal, state and local taxes that consumers already pay
for each phone line – was not the answer. Thanks to your advocacy, the County Board finally realized that as well.
Thank you for your effort to ensure the phone tax was defeated.
